This two-building project stands as one of our most extensive projects yet.
Collaborating with garden designer Karl Harrison, we expanded and seamlessly integrated the client's vision. The two garden buildings serve dual functions - a family and classroom space, and a dedicated area for an endless swimming pool with an adjoining canopy for alfresco dining.
In this case study we are focusing on the family room which also doubles up as a classroom for up to 10 children. To view the other building, click here.
Even though the client was happy to go with the largest building available at 30 square metres, the real challenge was finding the best way to combine the endless pool room and the family room for the perfect outcome.
After planning permission was sought and approved, the 7.5 x 4m Inline sliding room was very cleverly designed. Matching this building to the endless pool room gave the space a great sense of symmetry and kept the whole area feeling cohesive.
As this building would be used as a classroom, we included a toilet with the feature of Jack and Jill doors so that it was accessible from the outside area as well as the inside of the building. This created a connection to the other room and the garden entertainment space. Whilst a comprehensive outdoor grillo kitchen was installed in the canopy of the other building, it was agreed that a kitchenette and bar in the classroom/family room would add all year round usability. This bar also doubles up as a desk to be used by the teacher.
The kitchen area is compact but extremely efficient. We designed it in a way so that it's hidden away from where the children would be seated whilst being fully functional.
The impressive resin and wooden table from SMartwood provided this client with a great space for teaching and learning to take place.
It is impossible to ignore the huge 85 inch TV, which is also great for learning and works perfectly as a garden entertainment space, as it is perfectly central with the inline sliding doors when they're open.
The addition of an Emglaze roof light allows a flood of light onto the desk area and gives a great feeling of openness and integration with the outside.
Adding climate control to this room was another great addition as it means this client can achieve the perfect temperature all year round, whether the room is used as a classroom, family room or entertainment space.
The last part of this project was the bar area. With its black quartz stone and iroko trimming, the bar is a lovely addition that ties in perfectly the two buildings. The same stone and trimming was used throughout the outside grillo kitchen area, giving this entire garden project a stylish, cohesive look and feel.
Martin's comments:
'This project is one that I'm most proud of, I love the work and effort we all put in to make this feel like a cohesive one-stop-shop project, despite there being four principal companies involved.
Despite being quite compact, the kitchen area with the bar was finished beautifully. I love the small details of the splashbacks matching the worktop and bar. The black sink and tap look very stylish and do the job perfectly, along with the large fridge freezer with cold water and ice maker.
I have had great feedback from the client and his family. They are really enjoying the use of these buildings. Having a separate space for work and business that can quickly transform from a classroom to a family entertainment space has greatly improved this client's work-life balance and is incredibly convenient for him.'
What the client said:
'We envisioned transforming our garden into a space that could effortlessly transition into a functional workspace for our daily tasks—a space where we could feel as if we were on holiday while still being productive.
Choosing Bakers Garden Buildings was an easy decision; their innovative designs, especially the canopy solution for our outdoor kitchen, stood out. Despite involving multiple companies, the final result feels seamless and thoughtfully integrated, with each element exuding quality.
We're particularly fond of the cohesive look achieved throughout. Delighted with our garden rooms, we've decided to expand with a third building—an at-home office. This addition will seamlessly integrate with our existing project, featuring a striking internal rear wall made from oak and black slatted boarding with integrated LED lights. Stay tuned on our social media for updates on this exciting new addition!'
