The Project

These clients wanted to replace their dilapidated garage with a new building that would serve three purposes: a utility room, a potting shed, and a space to entertain friends and family year-round.

We always aim to use our pre-designed buildings, as they offer the most cost-effective solution.

At first, it seemed like this might not be possible for their needs. However, by working with standard sizes and customisable options, we were able to create a great solution that met all their needs.

The Work

Based on our Kite pre-designed building, the main room is 4.2m x 3m, with a standard 1.5m storage section on the left, uninsulated and equipped with a hardwood door. We mirrored this design on the right side, adding two large floor-to-ceiling windows and a glass door to create an uninsulated potting shed area.

During the manufacturing process, the clients requested a large portrait window in the partition to allow natural light from the potting shed into the main room. Even though the building was almost complete, we were able to adapt the partition to include this feature.

Since the existing garage base wasn't the correct size or level for the new room, we used a steel and timber frame base. This was installed over and beyond the garage base to create a firm, level foundation.

We then installed the building, including electrics and internet. While on site, the clients decided to upgrade the left storage section to be lined and insulated for greater year-round usability. We easily accommodated this change, agreeing it was the better solution.

The doors and windows in the main room were fitted with integrated blinds for privacy, making it suitable for overnight guests.

The Result

Martin Baker’s comments:

'It was fantastic to revisit this building once it was fully furnished and in use. When I arrived, the clients—who are avid cooks—were getting ready to host guests in the garden room for the first time.

The window in the partition, which was the clients’ idea, is a standout feature as you enter the room. It’s a brilliant addition to this design.

I’m proud that our team was able to accommodate the last-minute changes, making the room even more perfect for the clients.

It was also great to hear that the potting shed now doubles as a sunroom, with enough space for a sunbed. They can enjoy the sunshine without the wind, even on cooler days.

The clients are thrilled with their garage upgrade, and I’m confident they’ll enjoy this space for many years, hosting meals and gatherings with friends and family while making full use of their new utility room and potting shed.'
